The Great Forest Culture Park of Debrecen opened its gates in May 1958 as Hungary’s first zoo outside the capital. What began as a small facility has gradually become an integral part of both the city and the surrounding forest, growing into one of the region’s most important cultural and recreational institutions.
Our mission is species conservation and education. As a full member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) and as an affiliated department of the University of Debrecen, we actively contribute to international scientific research and conservation efforts.
